Offering a new way of life, with so many amenities!
The seven-story building at 2200 West 7th Street has a long history of serving the community, and a recent top-to-bottom remodeling project will allow the building to continue to serve as an affordable housing option for individuals aged 55 and above well into the future. Improvements include many visible changes, including new kitchens in each of the 111 independent living apartments; a new 24-hour coffee shop with a big-screen television; remodeled gathering spaces; and updated laundry facilities on each floor. Not-so-visible changes include a new and improved fire-prevention sprinkler system and modernized heating and air conditioning systems.
Other amenities include an on-site grocery store; a fitness center with
regularly scheduled exercise classes; a game room with pool table; and
an on-site library and craft room. The Canyons is a gated community with
secure parking and optional covered parking. The community also offers
non-denominational worship services and Bible study groups, along with a
wide range of regularly scheduled activities.
Sears Methodist Retirement System, Inc. operates The Canyons under the auspices of the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) that provides subsidized housing to seniors for a monthly fee based on income.
The building houses efficiencies, as well as one and two-bedroom apartment homes in a variety of unique floor plans. The Canyons provides 24-hour security and round-the-clock staff support. Monthly rental includes all utilities, except telephone and television. An optional lunch is served daily, seven days a week, and optional housekeeping services are also available.
The ornate facade of The Canyons recalls a bygone era of finely crafted architecture that has stood the test of time. Originally built as a hospital, the spacious seven-story structure has provided affordable apartment home floor plans since 1983.
